Respiratory Skills Training Courses

Tracheostomy

2 day course 1st Day – Theory 2nd day application to practice, care, emergencies

The attendees will have an awareness of:

  • What a tracheostomy is
  • Indications for tracheostomy
  • Stoma site care and infection control
  • Tracheostomy tape/tie changes
  • Tracheostomy emergencies including what to do if a tracheostomy becomes blocked or displaced
  • Simulated practice stations including, suction, tape/tie changes, tracheostomy tube change, seldinger technique and emergency
  • One person technique tracheostomy tube change.
  • Demonstrate accurate documentation and record keeping

Ventilation

Generic Awareness Or ventilator specific training

The attendees will understand:

  • What ventilation is
  • Ventilation at home and indications for treatment
  • Invasive and non-invasive ventilation
  • Modes of ventilation including CPAP and BiPAP
  • Safety checks on equipment
  • Care of an individual on a ventilator in the community including safety checks at the beginning of the shift.
  • Common ventilators and controls in the community
  • Troubleshooting ventilator alarms
  • Setting up wet and dry circuits
  • Ventilation record keeping and documentation

Non-Invasive Ventilation

Generic Awareness Or ventilator specific training

The attendees will be trained in order to:

  • Be able to describe the passage of air and gaseous exchange
  • Give detail of why a service user would need NIV
  • Give detail of types of NIV and what is documented
  • Troubleshooting the NIV ventilator
  • Be able to recognise the deteriorating Service User

Nasal Pharyngeal Airway (NPA)

The attendees will be able to:

  • Describe anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system and gaseous exchange
  • identify indications and contraindications for placing a nasopharyngeal airway
  • Determine the proper equipment required to place a nasopharyngeal airway.
  • Identify the possible complications of using nasopharyngeal airways.
  • Care and management of a NPA
  • Describe respiratory distress and what to do next
  • Demonstrate accurate documentation and record keeping

Suction – oral, tracheal, NPA, Oral pharyngeal

The attendees will be able to:

  • Give detail of the respiratory system and gaseous exchange
  • Describe what suctioning is
  • Safely check the suction machine
  • Explain why and when to suction 
  • List the reasons for requiring suction
  • Explain the potential risks of suction
  • Describe the correct positioning of the individual and preparation of equipment and environment
  • Demonstrate the correct procedure for suction
  • Demonstrate accurate documentation and record keeping

Cough Assist

The attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system
  • Explain why an individual would cough
  • why an individual would need assistance to cough.
  • Give detail of the Contra-indications of using the cough assist Machine
  • Describe the safety Checks before use of cough assist.
  • Describe the Cleaning, safety precautions, and maintenance.
  • Explain the contraindications of when not to use the cough assist
  • Demonstrate accurate documentation and record keeping

Oxygen therapy

The attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system
  • Explain what oxygen therapy is
  • why an individual would use oxygen therapy
  • give detail of who prescribes oxygen therapy
  • explain when to use oxygen therapy by recognising changes in the individual
  • demonstrate how to administer oxygen therapy
  • safely use the equipment used during oxygen therapy - manikin
  • Explain the risks of oxygen therapy (physical and environmental) 
  • Demonstrate documentation needed for oxygen therapy 

Nebuliser/Inhaler Administration

The attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system
  • Explain what nebulisers/inhalers are, and when they are used for respiratory treatments
  • Elaborate on the difference between nebulisers, inhalers, and spacers and list reasons for using each.
  • Describe possible side effects and know what actions to take when they occur.
  • Demonstrate Safe nebuliser/inhaler administration – manikin
  • Demonstrate accurate documentation and record keeping

Sleep Apnoea – Central/Obstructive

The attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system
  • Explain what sleep apnoea is
  • Describe the different types of sleep apnoea
  • Explain the effects sleep apnoea has on the body
  • Give detail of the signs and symptoms of sleep apnoea
  • Describe how to care for an individual with sleep apnoea
  • Demonstrate accurate documentation and record keeping
